Recursive released Flint on October 21, 2026, a free coding model under the Apache 2.0 license that runs offline on a laptop. Flint is a mixture of experts model with about 40 billion total parameters and about 2.5 billion active per token. Recursive says its automated research system, the Eureka Machine, helped with nearly every step of development, from data and training recipes to infrastructure and inference optimization, letting a small team build the model from scratch in under four months. The weights are available on Hugging Face, which Forkast verified independently, noting one specification discrepancy: the announcement describes a 512,000 token context window with 256,000 recommended, while the Hugging Face model card documents 262,144.

The speed and benchmark figures are Recursive's own tests and are stated as such: the company reports about 131 tokens per second on an M4 Pro MacBook Pro, roughly twice the rate it measured for comparable models on the same machine, and says Flint outperformed other models under 50 billion parameters on SWE-Bench Verified in its testing. TechCrunch reports that Wired's Will Knight used Flint on a Mac with 48GB of memory to build several small programs successfully. Recursive, led by former Salesforce chief scientist Richard Socher, emerged from stealth in May with $650 million at a $4.65 billion valuation.
