Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund
Anthropic said on October 18, 2026 that, subject to stockholder approval, it will commit 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, structured as a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3). The board may add a further 2% for every 50% increase in the company value above a baseline that has not yet been disclosed. No equity held by the fund may be used for lobbying or political giving in the United States or abroad.
Anthropic named labor market disruption as the first example the fund could address, building on a $200 million commitment to its Economic Futures Research Fund, and said the new fund will mainly back projects in the $5 million to $30 million range. Combined with the co-founders founding pledge of 80% of their equity and the employee donation match program, the company says roughly 20% of its shares are now tied to public benefit. Governance details and the valuation baseline are still to come.
