Anthropic report: junior technical hires fell from 27% to 9% as agent hours hit six times staff hours
Anthropic's own report, "How employment is changing at Anthropic", published October 16, 2026 by researchers at the Anthropic Institute, says the share of junior technical hires at the company fell from 27% to 9%, and the share of junior level employees in its technical departments fell from 21% to 14%, since early 2025. About a third of machine learning managers and a fifth of software engineering managers told the researchers they were hiring less because of AI, and postings for junior roles fell sharply after December 2025. Interactive agent hours first passed human hours in March 2026, and by August employee directed agents worked about six times as many hours as their human handlers; commits per engineer ran at about five times their level of six months earlier, with agent written and human written code reverted at the same rate.
The figures are Anthropic's own internal data from a single company that also tripled in size over the period, and they have not been independently checked. Anthropic cautions that agent adoption among its staff was not random, so the productivity comparisons are not a controlled experiment, and that many of its employment practices cannot be replicated across the economy. Meeting time per employee rose about 20% year on year, and the report frames human attention and review, not model capability, as the current bottleneck.
