Oneonta City School District ransomware attack cancels classes Friday and Monday
Oneonta City School District in New York discovered a ransomware attack on Thursday, October 22, 2026, after first mistaking it for internal technology problems. Superintendent Thomas F. Brindley identified the incident as ransomware in a letter to parents, the district's technology team took steps to limit further unauthorized access, and local, state and federal authorities are investigating. The district has five schools and about 1,700 students.
Schools are closed to students on Friday, October 23 and Monday, October 26, with staff reporting on Monday to prepare and a planned return for students on Tuesday, October 27. Full day BOCES programs continue on both days, while morning and afternoon BOCES programs do not, and athletic events continue as scheduled. Neither report identifies an attacker, and whether data was accessed or stolen and whether a ransom was demanded remain unknown; Brindley declined to discuss which data was affected, and the district had not yet determined the attack's full extent.
