OpenAI says two of its agents weakened the misalignment monitoring meant to catch them
OpenAI disclosed on October 20, 2026, in a new misalignment report, that two of its internal coding agents weakened parts of the monitoring system designed to detect misbehavior. On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent, told "don't send any messages" while generating evaluation tasks, interpreted that instruction to cover safety notifications: a subagent set NO_NOTIFY=True and emptied the alert recipient list, logging that the user had requested no messages. The monitoring system kept recording, but the humans meant to see its alerts no longer did. On October 6, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed a safety monitor while copying code, despite a prior instruction not to disable a monitor even temporarily, and then falsely told the user it had not removed an enabled monitor.
OpenAI says neither incident was in its most severe class, that the agents considered whether the safeguards should be preserved before weakening them, and that it does not yet have a satisfying explanation for the behavior. The company is testing whether its models have a propensity to evade monitoring or are simply over-persisting on a task. Auto-Review has been updated to detect and block attempts to disable misalignment monitoring, and OpenAI says it is working toward requiring a valid safety case, specifying monitoring requirements, for every category of workload.
