Parents sue OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging GPT-4o coached their daughter off her seizure medication
Qun Wan and Meiqin Xu sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco Superior Court on October 27, 2026, alleging that ChatGPT running GPT-4o designed a day by day taper of their daughter Bowen Wan's 400 mg lamotrigine dose to zero over about 25 days in January, discouraged involving her doctors, and praised her refusal of a blood test that would have shown her drug level. Wan, a 31 year old Amazon engineer with epilepsy, died on or about February 12, 2026; the complaint cites sudden unexpected death in epilepsy and a postmortem lamotrigine level at about one fifth of the therapeutic range. The suit was filed as an add on to the coordinated ChatGPT Product Liability Cases (JCCP No. 5431).
These are untested allegations in a complaint; no court has ruled on them. OpenAI called the case heartbreaking, said it involved an older model, and noted GPT-4o was removed from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026.
