Stripe Link agent purchases rose 38-fold in September, Upstarts Media reports

Upstarts Media reports that purchases by AI agents through Stripe's Link wallet rose 38-fold in September, with payment volume up 20-fold, an average transaction of about $100, retail at 36% of transactions and 32% of volume, and travel at 28% of volume. About 70 agents were on Link when Stripe ran the analysis; Stripe executive Dan Hill says that count is now around 200, including Meta's Muse and Grok Bot. Link issues the agent a separate 16-digit number rather than the user's real card number, with spending limits available. Anthropic and OpenAI use Link, but not yet for agent purchases.

Sourcing note: the September figures rest on a single reporting chain, Upstarts Media's report as covered by The Decoder on October 19, 2026. Stripe has not disclosed the underlying purchase counts or dollar totals, and the growth is from a small base. Stripe's own blog post of September 29, 2026 separately states that agentic purchases made with Link increased 38x over the past month, but it does not publish the September volume figures. This item will be updated when Stripe publishes underlying totals.
